Hello. I’m Zachary Sequoia and I create digital media. Having worked within the creative industry and digital start-up space for over 18 years in Australia, the United States and Asia, I now freelance my skills for the forces of good.
I often dream in pixels. Starting my first paid web design job for a leading San Francisco agency at just 18 years old, I’ve been emersed in leading edge trends, best practice and general web heuristics ever since.
I’ve designed anything and everything digital from corporate sites, SaaS UI, e-commerce, mobile and tablet applications and interactive multimedia presentations and kiosks.
Sometimes I dream in picas. I love designing for print media, starting out in large-format publications, technical books and magazines.
With a fondness for corporate branding and business stationery , I have also designed full-scale environment spaces (conference stalls and promotional areas) as well as product packaging for a variety of industries from food and drink to baby products.
Obsessed with usability, from early in my career I have been involved with user experience and the simplification of complex visual ideas and user pathways.
I have been consulting to StartUps for over a decade helping to coax cohesive tangible assets such as user flow charts, wireframes and digital prototypes from the chaotic ethers of their initial concepts.
My career was forged in the fires of the San Francisco technology boom of the mid/late 90′s with projects for some of America’s largest and most notable companies including an award winning intranet and sales application for Cisco Systems (‘Best Intranet of the Year′, Neilson-Norman Group), a global e-commerce site for Logitech Corporation and a front-end sales tool for Telestream (the inventors of mpeg video).
When the boom finally cooled in 2001, I looked abroad for new design contracts to satisfy my creative addiction. After leading a design team for a British company in Asia, I eventually ended up in Australia and I loved it enough to stay. The artistic and cultural melting-pot of Melbourne provided the perfect location to found my own agency Wooden Pier Creative Media. For the next nine years, I worked on exciting projects for companies such as Nike, Loréal Paris, Chadstone, Lonely Planet, Tourism Victoria, Destra Corporation and a number of Australian Governmental departments.
Always an adventurer at heart, In 2011, I decided to take some time off and sailed my blue water catamaran 18,000 kilometers around the Sea of Cortez, Mexico and across the Pacific Ocean with my family. I now reside on a spectacular bit of coast in New South Wales and still maintain a strong client base in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra for my freelance work – traveling to these cities frequently. I am currently seeking contracts as a Creative Director / Senior Designer as well as Incubation-level consulting in the areas of UX and Digital Innovation.
I hold a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication from Monash University and a degree in Multimedia from Sierra Technical College (U.S.A.)
Zak is a highly talented individual who is capable of understanding business needs and objectives, and translating this to extremely high quality output.
Zak’s work is of an extremely high standard – the highest I have worked with during my career. He is fast, efficient and very savvy when it comes to the subtlety of visual communication and usability.
As a startup breaking new ground in this space, we required someone with a broad understanding of the underlying technologies that would power our projects and Zak was a strong liaison between each of our developers from around the world, effectively communicating and giving direction to programmers where English is their second or third language.
Zak was also able to immediately understand our vision and not only create amazing designs, they were also incredibly intuitive with an insightful level of detail placed on usability and interface interaction, the importance of which cannot be understated as new technology must be intuitive for user uptake.
Zak, is an on brief business focused designer with a great ability to see things from a functional, marketing and consumer perspective resulting in fantastic user experiences. Zak is also one of the fastest designers I have ever worked with, he easily hits deadlines without compromising the outcome.
The Change Agency needed an entirely new website and an image reboot. We needed a customised solution to create a user-friendly interface for our extensive resource collection. Zak was terrific to work with: a good listener who understood our needs and worked with us to craft the perfect integrated solution. He’s a gifted developer and designer.
Zak’s work always impressed me, and I can be quite particular when it comes to design… It can be difficult to balance great IA, simple concise navigation and a stunning design, but Zak always delivered this. He has a bold and provocative talent, but takes on feedback with humility and an open mind. I really enjoyed working with him and recommend him highly.
Drop me a line to get the ball rolling. If I’m near, I’ll come to you and shout a coffee :)
