User Interface and Websites

//user interface & websites

I dream in pixels. I watched the internet come online while I was in high school and I quickly became a part of it.

I started my first paid web design job when I was 17 for one of San Francisco's largest digital design companies: Tristream.

I'm obsessed with usability and always stay on the leading edge of design trends, best practice and general web heuristics.

I've designed anything and everything digital from full software UI to websites, e-commerce, mobile applications and interactive multimedia presentations and kiosks.

Print and Packaging

//print, publication & packaging

I have more than a decade of experience designing for print media.

Starting in large format publication designing technical books and magazines I am very comfortable with pre-press management.

I specialise in corporate brand packages and business stationery including award winning business card design.

I have designed full-scale environment spaces (conference stalls and promotional areas) as well as product and packaging for a variety of industries from food and drink to baby products.

Corporate Brand Strategy

//corporate brand strategy

From the early days, I have always been invited into brand strategy meetings for clients large and small.

Having started in a time where most companies were 'Start-Up' firms, most clients needed full identity packages from logo to signage to corporate culture guidance.

I have a knack for finding the 'special sauce' and love designing brand campaigns.

From pure logo design right through to brand implication across a variety of media, I have worked within television, events (promotional and environmental space design) as well as bulk mail campaigns.

A bit about me.

Zak, is an on brief business focused designer with a great ability to see things from a functional, marketing and consumer perspective resulting in fantastic user experiences. Zac is also one of the fastest designers I have ever worked with, he easily hits deadlines without compromising the outcome.

-Simon Crean
CEO at AdEffective Limited

Zak's work always impressed me, and I can be quite particular when it comes to design... It can be difficult to balance great IA, simple concise navigation and a stunning design, but Zak always delivered this. He has a bold and provocative talent, but takes on feedback with humility and an open mind. I really enjoyed working with him and recommend him highly.

I started working in the creative design industry over 16 years ago in San Francisco with some of America’s largest and most notable companies during the technology boom of the mid/late 90′s.

Some of the project work in these early years included an award winning intranet and sales application for Cisco Systems (‘Best Intranet of the Year′, Neilson-Norman Group), a global e-commerce site for Logitech Corporation and a front-end sales tool for Telestream (the inventors of mpeg video).

With the crash of the technology boom in America, I sought international contracts and worked on an array of projects in South East Asia and Canada eventually settling in Melbourne, Australia in 2003.

The artistic and cultural melting-pot of Melbourne provided the perfect location for my design company Wooden Pier Creative Media. Through Wooden Pier, I worked on exciting projects for companies such as Nike, Loréal Paris, Chadstone, Lonely Planet, Tourism Victoria, Destra Corporation and a number of Australian Governmental departments.

In 2011, I decided to take some time off and sailed a catamaran 18,000 kilometers around the Sea of Cortez, Mexico and back across the Pacific with my family. You can read more about that here if you're interested.

I now reside in New South Wales, but still maintain a strong client base in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra for my freelance work and travel to these cities frequently.

I hold a BA in Visual Communication from Monash University and a degree in Multimedia from Sierra Technical College (U.S.A.)

I still own my Catamaran the s/v Wendy Ellen.
